What is depression:

While depressive mood patterns are a part of being human, depression itself is so much more than just a state of mind. It encompasses a physiological aspect as much as it does a psychological, causing disturbances to both body and mind.

What causes depression:

The causes are not exactly known, and because of this depression is sometimes misdiagnosed. However, clinical depression is more than just a stress response. Depression can range from relatively minor (yet still debilitating) to severe.

Main causes that lead to depression:

  • Major life changes like divorce, job loss or job change, retirement or the death of a loved one can increase the risk of falling into a depression.
  • Negative life events like abuse, illness, a tough childhood can also contribute to depression later in life.
  • Conflict with loved ones, family or friends. If you’re particularly vulnerable, such conflicts can lead to depression
  • Chronic stress: Resulting from illnesses, relationships, financial woes, or a career. Any form of stress increases cortisol, the stress hormone which decreases serotonin, the ‘happy’ hormone.

Symptoms:

  • Low energy and fatigue
  • Finding no pleasure in pleasurable activities
  • A feeling of worthlessness, helplessness or guilt
  • Significant weight loss or gain
  • Difficulty making decisions
  • Avoiding work or social commitments
  • Insomnia or excessive sleeping
  • Feeling empty
  • Reoccurring thoughts of death or suicide
