Although we have been blessed with a beautiful late and hot summer this year, I’m, personally, so excited for fall. There is something magical that surrounds this time of year. The sun is still out, the leaves are changing color and the stressful Christmas season is still far away. Let us cherish these chilled few weeks and get cozy at home. One of my favorite treats to make is caramel apples. Apples are in season right now, which means that their taste has fully developed and you can enjoy them at their tastiest. Adding caramel to this fantastic fruit makes it even better. If you have a free afternoon on your hands and you don’t mind making a little mess in your kitchen, this recipe will reward you with the most delicious treat.
You will need:
– 6 Apples
– 1 Package of Caramels
– 2 Tablespoons of cream
– 1 Package of Graham Crackers ( I prefer the cinnamon kind for this recipe)
– Half a bar of white chocolate (optional)
Instructions:
1. Wash the apples and pat them dry. Take the graham crackers and put them in a plastic bag. Take a bottle and crush the crackers whilst they are in the bag. You can also use a food processor to complete this step more quickly, but I prefer my crumbs to be a little bit bigger. Dump the crumbs into a large bowl.
2. Unwrap all caramels and place them in a pot. Over medium heat, slowly melt the caramels whilst continuously stirring them with a wooden spoon. Make sure that you don’t burn them. When you reach a creamy consistency, take the pot off the stove and add the cream. Mix it all together.
3. Place the apples on a baking sheet and cover them in the caramel sauce by dripping the caramel over them with a spoon. Immediately dip them in the graham cracker crumbles, roll the apple around and place it again on the baking sheet to let it cool.
4. (Optional) Melt the white chocolate in a bowl over some hot water and let it drizzle all over the apples. This does not only add a beautiful light touch to them but also tastes extremely delicious.
5. You can now either cut the apples up and serve them as finger food, or put a wooden stick in them and eat them like you would a corn dog. The latter method is usually less messy. You can also put the apples in a little plastic bag, tie a pretty bow around and they will make the greatest gift. You can also store them in the fridge for up to one week.
