So my sister lives in LA, and I was visiting her. At this point, I was still working in coffee, and I was on my way to Panama and thought, “Okay I just make a stopover in LA”… But then I was so fascinated from the lifestyle – from the juice and yoga world – I skipped my plan, and I stayed in LA instead of going for coffee harvesting. And back in Berlin I just, yeah, felt deep inside I want to share it, and I wanna spread it in Berlin – because at this point it was not so much in Berlin. So I talked to my sister and said like, “Oh yeah, let’s do it” – and then this, well, everything started. So when we started back in 2014, we had just a little production kitchen – and this was in Prenzlauerberg, and I would just go to Korbitz Market – to the organic market – and handpick from different small farmers around Berlin. And from the beginning it was really important for us to be only organic – to just choose organic produce – and also, we worked with Markthalle 9… and their suppliers. And yeah, also today we are still working with Markthalle 9 as a supplier for organic produce. So… favorite part? Working with my sister… Hm, I think it’s nice to have a sparring partner. And also, to have this mirror and always honest opinion, you know, about things. Sometimes, not so much fun, but it’s like… Yeah. I understand that… I also have a sister – but good! Because we are so close, yeah.

J. R. Thesis Smith is a mixed-race millenial in the dawn of their 30s & a wordsmith of sorts. They've spent most of their waking life in the U.S. – in the urban sprawl of NYC that is New Jersey, in the depths of its suburban echoes – but always dreamed of making their way across a bigger pond, to a place where opportunity would knock a little more often. After completing their training at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts (effectively spending three poor years in NYC) as a dance major, they gifted themselves a semester of studying abroad in Berlin, and in doing so kept a vow made in early adolescence – thereby inciting a metamorphosis of promise into full-bodied intention: to eventually fully emigrate to Berlin, the first space that had ever allowed them the freedom to find their own breath, their pace of existence. Now that they finally live there, they're learning how to breathe again – striving to become a more active member of the Undercommons as they continue on the odyssey that is their self-realization as an artistic being. Their most resonant hope is that they will be able to say what is true & necessary & kind; that people will find the time to listen, to themselves and each other; and that their voice will inspire other voices to speak out in turn.
It’s that time of the year again! The Pink Weekends…
