Theobroma Cacao Seed Butter (also known as cacao or cocoa butter) is a natural, edible, non-irritant fat extracted from the seeds of the Theobroma cacao tree. In cosmetics it is used as a skin-conditioning agent as well as a skin-protectant. As it forms a protective barrier on the skin it guards against harmful or annoying external factors, while also helping skin to retain moisture, keeping it elastic. High levels of vitamins and antioxidants make cocoa butter a great anti-inflammatory moisturizer that is gentle enough to soothe dry, sensitive or irritated skin and even promote healing by facilitating the repair of damaged skin cells. As a source of polyphenols cocoa butter also helps with signs of ageing, enhances collagen production and boosts dermal circulation - for healthier, softer and smoother skin. Used in hair care it replenishes naturally ocurring oils and adds shine.
Cocoa butter is a very stable fat, containing natural antioxidants which ensure a long shelf-life. Its melting point is at around 90°F.
