Hypericum Perforatum, or St. John’s Wort, has been used as a medicinal herb for millennia. The red, oily extract sourced from the plant’s flowers has highly anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and wound-healing properties, making it ideal for the topical treatment of scars, wounds, burns, dermatitis, eczema as well as blemished skin.
Also found in a lot of oral medication it is used for its calming, mood-balancing benefits and helps with sleeping problems and nervousness.
Taken orally in large doses, Hypericin – which gives the extract its deep red colour – can cause photosensibility. Applied topically fairer skin tones should take extra care and use it as night care only or apply additional sun protection.
