The healing and regenerating properties of rice (oryza sativa) for use in skin care have been well documented since ancient times. With a chemical structure similar to skin's own ceramide it supports collagen production making skin supple, smooth and softening fine lines and wrinkles. It also has moisturizing and exfoliating properties while not clogging skin pores and thus helps inflammatory conditions like acne and rosacea. Formerly used topically as a poultice to help heal injured and inflamed skin, today it is mainly used in the form of a finely milled powder. The powder of rice is a cosmetic grade food starch, meaning that it is edible and very stable. Added to make-ups and concealers it gives the product a silky matte finish and shelf-stability as well as its healing properties. In liquid form, as rice water, it can be added to cleansers, moisturizers and lotions for its emollient, exfoliating properties.
