A glass of sparkling wine here, a mug of glühwein there, and before you know it you’ll be looking at a pounding headache the next day. Moreover, it’s irrelevant in which order you drink beer and wine; all that matters is that amount of alcohol in your blood to make you feel horrible the next day.

The one tip that has been recommended to me over and over, was to visit a sauna in case of a hangover, and sweat out all the toxins. Alcohol is not excreted from the body through sweat however, but only gets reduced in the blood. In addition, the strong sweating only reinforces the alcohol related water and mineral deficiencies in the body. Best to avoid the sauna then.

  • Prevention is key. While getting ready and applying make-up for a party, you might as well make sure to take in some vitamins to avoid an unpleasant post-party state as much as possible. A hangover is partly caused by a vitamin A, B and C depletion, so eat some fresh fruit and veggies before you head to the dance floor.
  • Drink a glass of water in between every alcoholic drink. Dehydration is also a major cause of hangover, so prevent getting dehydrated.
  • Drink a big glass of water before hitting the sack, and if you suspect you won’t be awakening all fresh and fruity, go ahead and take an aspirin as well.
  • Don’t close your curtains when you’re finally home again. Natural light regulates release of the sleep hormone melatonin, and makes waking up and getting out of bed a lot easier, compared to sleeping in total
  • A hearty breakfast will boost the nutrient level of the body back into balance – eating pickled herring for a hangover is not a myth. Actually, everything that is hot and greasy will help make you feel better.
  • Exercise! But only if your head isn’t pounding too much. A light jog or brisk walk is in any case recommended – fresh air always helps.
  • If you can’t make it out the door, try a hot-cold shower, which will stimulate the circulation. To get rid of your headache, try a detox tea that contains ginger. Stay clear of teas such as green, black or nettle; these teas are known to be diuretics, meaning they help the body get rid of excess fluid.
  • If you need to look presentable the next day, refrain from putting on an extra layer of make-up. Better to go for just a tinted moisturizer, concealer, blush and mascara. Plastering your face with make-up will most of the time make you look more tired, and even older.

And don’t forget – don’t drink & drive!
