Swatched: natural foundations and concealers compared!

Dark circles, blemishes or redness are the unwelcome side effects of everyday life that everyone suffers from. In order to achieve a fresh and well-rested look, we cheat with concealers, foundations and creams. There is a huge selection of cover-up products out there, and keeping track of all of them is not an easy task. There are so many questions to answer: which product is the best for my skin type? Which color suites my skin tone? How do I apply the product professionally?

To help you out as much as possible, I took it upon myself to test, try, compare, and swatch the most popular natural and organic concealers, foundations and tinted moisturizers from the Amazingy range. Before you decide on a specific product and color, you should try to identify your own skin type and skin tone. I myself have normal to dry skin, and very fair skin. This quiz and easy guide makes determining your skin type and undertone a lot easier.
Afterwards, if you’re still unsure about which color to choose, try out the Amazingy Sample Kit, with which you can try out several different shades of a product. Have fun testing and onwards to a flawless, fresh complexion!

RMS Beauty Un Cover-Up

The cream concealer from RMS Beauty already achieved cult status in the world of natural cosmetics – and for good reason. Great design, easy to use and (almost) unbeatable opacity make it a favorite amongst beauty bloggers.

At first glance I was afraid that RMS No.00, the brightest shade, might still be a bit too dark for me. When applying it however, I quickly realized that the product adapts very well to my tone through the natural mineral pigments. The creamy consistency makes it easy to blend and creates an even complexion and natural glow. With my rather dry skin type I can even use the Un Cover-Up as a light foundation.

The product comes in five different shades, accounting for all skin tones from light to dark:

No. 00: The brightest color for the Snow Whites among us
No. 11: For light skin with yellow or neutral undertones
No. 22: For a light to medium complexion with a warm or olive undertone
No. 33: For the medium complexion with olive, yellow or neutral undertones.
No. 44: For the honey and caramel complexion with neutral, yellow or red undertone.
Also suitable as a bronzer or contouring product.

Which skin type wears it best?
Un Cover-Up is a very rich product containing both coconut and jojoba oil and beeswax, and is therefore especially recommended for dry and normal skin. If you prefer a more matte look, or have oily skin, apply the ‘Un’Powder afterwards.

What is it good for?
T-zone, impurities, dark circles, or as a light foundation for dry skin.

How do I apply?
Can be easily applied with fingers or by using a foundation brush, such as the RMS Beauty Skin2Skin Foundation Brush.

Kjaer Weis Cream Foundation

The world of natural cosmetics has rarely seen anything as luxurious as the Kjaer Weis Cream Foundation. The packaging reminds of an old fashioned little jewelry box, the compact reminiscent of a silver Zippo lighter. It all definitely looks classy, but what about the quality?

The foundation, which is known for its extreme coverage, is easy to blend, leaving you with a natural looking semi-matte finish. Depending on your needs you can apply a bit more or a bit less and thus choose the intensity of coverage.
Everything seems just right with this product: high quality ingredients (among which almond seeds and coconut and jojoba oil), beautiful design and a great performance. The only thing that might throw you off is the price, were it not for the refills.
Granted, the Cream Foundation might be a bit too much to carry around when you’re on the go, but that’s where the practical Z-Palette comes in.

Kjaer Weis carries the most extensive range of colors from all tested cover-up products, so you’re guaranteed to find a matching tone for your skin:

Like Porcelain: For pale skin with pink undertones (also great for delicate, sensitive skin)
Silken: For very light to medium skin tones with yellow undertones
Paper Thin: For very light to medium skin tones (just like Silken), but with cool, rosy undertones
Just Sheer: A warm beige for a light to semi-dark skin tone with olive-colored or golden undertones
Illusion: A warm, honey-colored hue, for medium to medium-brown skin tone with an olive or golden undertone
Velvety: A darker shade for a medium brown to dark skin tone with an olive or golden undertone
Delicate: For medium-dark to dark skin tones with a golden undertone

Which skin type wears it best?
Extensive coverage for blemishes or redness, suitable for all skin types.

What is it good for?
This product is pure perfection for the entire face.

How do I apply?
The Cream Foundation is the easiest to apply with a brush, such as the Kjaer Weis Foundation Brush.

Hiro Space Balm

The HIRO Space Balm is brand new and has the potential to become my favorite beauty product. The Space Balm is incredibly long lasting due to its matte texture, and covers blemishes such as pimples, redness and dark circles perfectly.
The HIRO Space Balm comes with 6 colors into the race. At the moment, these are mostly suitable to European, lighter skin tones, which means this brand is much more suited for the fair skinned than some American brands tend to be. For very fair skinned people like me, this is awesome news. I generally prefer a matte look, which makes this concealer both because of its texture and color range perfect for me.

Because the pigments in 100% natural concealers easily adapt to ones skin tone, it’s very easy to find the right shade:

#02 Altaira: For very bright and light skin types. It creates an elfish glow for the pale complexion
#04 Nala: For light to medium skin types with warm (yellow or olive) skin undertones
#06 Alita: For light to medium skin types with cool (pink and bluish) skin undertones
#08 Talleah: For light to medium skin types with no obvious skin undertones – a neutral beige
#10 Nova: For medium skin types with warm (yellow or olive) skin undertones. Looks like a honey beige on skin types that tan easily.
#2 Nyota: A peachy beige for medium and dark skin types with olive undertones

Which skin type wears it best?
I recommend HIRO Space Balm for all skin types that find other natural concealers to be too greasy, and those who prefer a matte long lasting finish. In the end, this product is suitable for all skin types.

What is it good for?
Blemishes, redness and dark circles.

How do I apply?
To cover up impurities I recommend a concealer brush (for example HIRO Cosmetics Concealer Brush # 1.20) or just the fingertips. To create an even complexion on the entire face, the Space Balm is best applied with the Beauty Blender. Bonus point: this product is completely vegan.

ILIA Beauty Vivid Concealer

So far I have only tested creamy concealers and foundations, both known to be often very rich, providing excellent coverage. However, during summer time I’d like my skin to be able to breathe a bit more without having to put on a thick layer of make up. Liquid textures are a good choice for that, and the ILIA Beauty Vivid Concealer turns out to be ideal.

With medium coverage, dark circles are easily hidden while still leaving the eye area to look fresh and awake. The concealer contains a ton of great botanical ingredients such as aloe vera, coconut oil, and even extracts of the arnica flower and green tea. This ensures not only moisture, but also makes this liquid concealer suitable for the sensitive eye area. In addition, it reduces inflammation in impurities.

ILIA’s Concealer covers a wide range in color – from very, very light to very dark. Due to the easy, natural formulation and the average covering effects, the color of the Liquid Concealer fits perfectly to different skin tones:

C1 Cassava: for a very fair complexion
C2 Maca: a fair complexion
C3 Dandelion: for a light to medium complexion
C4 Ginseng: for a medium complexion
C5 Licorice: for a medium to dark complexion
C6 Clove: a dark complexion

Which skin type wears it best?
The ILIA Liquid Concealer is ideal for those who want to cover up some slight redness or shadows under the eyes, and at the same time need some moisturizing and care from their foundation. For heavily blemished skin I would recommend to try a cream concealer instead. This one however is also perfect for sensitive skin.

What is it good for?
Circles under the eyes and any redness in the face.

How do I apply?
Best applied by using a brush or a mini Beauty Blender.

ILIA Beauty Sheer Vivid Tinted Moisturizer SPF 20

The ILIA Beauty Sheer Vivid Tinted Moisturizer is a great all-round product and is especially ideal during the summer time as a light, tinted cream with added sun protection. With its light to medium opacity it evens out the skin tone and covers up redness. This product also packs some moisturizing power, which means it can be also used as a day cream. The liquid texture spreads out easily and is absorbed by the skin rather quickly, making the skin not just look fresh, but also feel like it. For me, this product is the perfect lightweight cover up product for the hot summer months.

Just like the Liquid Concealer, the ILIA Tinted Moisturizer provides for a wide variety of skin tones. Due to its easy, liquid texture, the product blends well and adapts to your skin tone perfectly. An added bonus: the Tinted Moisturizer makes me crave hot summer days even more, seeing as the different tones are named after the most beautiful beaches in the world:

T1 Los Roques: For very fair complexions that barely tan during summer
T2 Bellemare: For a light skin tone that only tans a little during the summer
T3 Hanalei: For bright winter skin that gets a golden tone during the summer
T4 Ramla Bay: For complexions with intense olive undertones that develops a warm caramel hue while tanning
T5 Lovina: This one suits rich, deep skin tones
T6 Muriwai: Darker shade for deep brown complexions with neutral undertones

Which skin type wears it best?
For those who want an even skin tone and just need a little bit of cover up power as well. Day cream SPF included.

What is it good for?
Great for circles under the eyes, and any types of redness and blemishes.

How do I apply?
Best applied with a brush or a Beautyblender.

Thank you so much for the swatches ! Truly and greatly appreciated. It’s super hard to find natural foundations for women of color so the swatches are a definite life saver.
