Exfoliation

What is exfoliation:

Exfoliation is either the manual or chemical process which removes the oldest (and dead) skin cells from the outer most layer of the skin.

  • Manual exfoliation requires physcial scrubbing of the skin, using exfoliants that range from a soft konjac sponge, face washer or something more abrasive like crushed apricot kernels or ground coffee.
  • Chemical exfoliation contain chemicals like salicylic, malic, glycolic, alpha hydroxy (AHA) or beta hydroxy (BHA) or enzymes which work to break down the bond between skin cells, loosening the dead skin cells.

Why exfoliate:

Exfoliation speeds up the process of the turn over of cells, which inevitable slows as we age. By exfoliating dead cells are removed and fresher, softer and younger skin are left behind.

How to exfoliated correctly:

  1. Prepare the body by starting with a body brushing (link to article)
  2. Depending on what exfoliant you use either apply to dry or wet skin
  3. Start at the bottom of your feet and work your way up in circular motions
  4. Avoid sensitive patches or areas where the skin is thin, like the inner thigh, inner arm and around the eyes.
  5. Rinse under lukewarm water, dry and moisturise

Note: Avoid over exfoliation as it can damage the outer skin barrier, 2-3 times a week is optimal. Coarse scrubs that contain grains such as coffee or nut shell are better for the body where the skin it tougher, and should be avoided on the face.
