Dandruff

What is dandruff:

Dandruff is a condition where the scalp sheds small white flakes or scales. It’s neither a sign of poor hygiene nor is it contagious.

What causes dandruff:

The cause is still unknown, but the presence of a fungal/yeast organism will almost always be there

  • Fungal overgrowth, in the form of Malassezia globosa or Malassezia furfur
  • Other skin conditions like seborrhoeic dermatitis, eczema or psoriasis which can affect the scalp
  • Stress, which will worsen any condition in the body

Symptoms:

White flakes, redness, itching, sore or tingling scalp. Worsening during seasonal changes and throughout the winter.

How to get rid of dandruff:

While anti-dandruff shampoos temporarily alleviate dandruff, long term, the problem will reappear. The best thing you can do is to improve overall skin quality, reducing any fungal overgrowth by following an anti-candida diet (link) also try:

  1. Discontinuing use of anti-dandruff shampoos
  2. Washing hair with lukewarm water and rinsing with cold water
  3. Washing your hair less
  4. Towel dry with a clean towel
  5. Use minimal styling products
