Constipation

What is constipation:

It’s not a topic many want to openly talk about, so how do you know if your bowel movements are ‘normal’ or constipated? Normal is what is normal for you, if you have a regular routine then consider yourself a normal pooper. This can range form 3 times a day to 3 times a week. Anything less than 3 times a week is considered constipated. Also see the bristol stool chart. [see link]

What causes constipation:

  • Dehydration and low fibre intake are some of the most common causes. Both can be corrected quite quickly, by drinking more water and eating more fibrous foods.
  • Stress also plays a role in our bowel moments, whether they are blocked or running.
  • The female hormone progesterone
  • Certain medications
  • Irritable bowel syndrome

Symptoms:

  • Trouble passing / straining
  • Hard stool
  • An incomplete feeling of evacuation

Associated symptoms: Bloating, flatulence, skin problems, bad breath.

How to treat constipation:

First start by drinking more water, at least 2L a day. Add more fibrous foods to your diet. Some of the best sources of fibre are flaxseeds, pysillyum husk, whole grains, lentils, fruits and vegetables. Pears, berries, broccoli, spinach, are a good place to start as they contain the highest fibre content. The more fibre you eat, the more water you should drink. If digestion and constipation is still a problem after this, consider seeing a doctor or naturopath.
