Blood sugar levels

What are blood sugar levels:

Blood sugar level refers to the fluctuating levels of glucose (sugar) in the blood, of which, the body is constantly regulating balance. Blood sugar comes from the foods you eat, that are digested and turned into sugar to fuel the body. Whatever is not used for the body’s daily energy is stored for later.
After meals, our blood sugar level rises, which triggers several chemical reactions in the body to help shuttle nutrients into the bloodstream. If meals are being skipped or too much time is left in between meals, blood sugar will drop. Alternatively, if levels are persistently high from over eating or high blood sugar levels will rise.

Symptoms:

  • Low blood sugar levels, referred to as hypoglycaemia (hypo-low; glycemia- blood sugar) can present as mood swings or ‘hangry’ feelings, irritability, exhaustion and craving for sugar or caffeine. A key sign to know if you have low blood sugar levels, is if these symptoms improve after eating.
  • High blood sugar levels is referred to as hyperglycaemia (hyper-high; glycemia- blood sugar). Failure to regulate blood sugar can result in Type 2 diabetes.

How to balance blood sugar levels:

It’s better to prevent low blood sugar levels than grab for a sugary snack when you’re already hungry. Eating high sugar foods as an antidote to low sugar levels will only give you an energy spike, which will drop shortly after. Instead, try eating a snack with protein such as yoghurt, eggs, legumes and grains, meat or cheese that will help a slow release of sugar into the bloodstream and create a sustainable energy.
