Allergies

What are allergies:

An allergy is the immune system’s hypersensitive and inflammatory response to environmental substances. While allergens can seem harmless to most people, an allergy sufferer can have mild, anaphylactic or life threatening responses to certain allergens. They are among the most common chronic conditions worldwide.

An allergy is not to be confused with an intolerance which is a non-immune mediated reaction to something.

What causes an allergy:

Most commonly dust, pollen, grass, foods (eg. peanuts and seafood) animal dander, mould, medications or insect stings trigger an allergic reaction.

Symptoms:

Usually irritate the nose, throat, ears, sinus, lungs, digestive tract and skin. Presenting as:

  • Skin rash
  • Sneezing / running nose
  • Asthma
  • Swelling
  • Nausea/ diarrhoea
  • Headaches

What to do about allergies:

Some low reactive allergens which are not life threatening can be managed in small amounts. It is up to the individual how their life is impacted by each allergic response and if it’s best to avoid the allergen.
Supplementing with natural antihistamines like quercetin or bromelain and dietary changes which support gut health and the immune system have also seen to make improvements for allergy sufferers.
Due to the potential severity of certain allergic reactions, strict avoidance is sometimes the only way. In this case, your doctor might recommend to carry an epi-pen at all times. This gives a quick shot of adrenaline which will open up the airways in a life threatening situation.
