AcneWhat is acne:Also known as pimples, zits, spots, blemishes, black heads or white heads, acne vulgaris typically appears on the face, chest, arms, neck, back and buttocks. It usually comes as a part of adolescence, but for many, the condition can stay throughout adulthood. What causes acne:Acne occurs when oil and dead skin cells block our hair follicles or skin pores. This blockage can become inflamed and a breeding ground for bacteria and germs. If the infection spreads, it will cause the skin to become red, swollen, sore and emit puss. Other factors include: Hormonal changes where the skin starts to produces more oil. Some women might notice breakouts around the time of their menstrual cycle. Poor bowel movements. Constipation will see a blockage of waste and toxins in the body. When our bowels aren’t function properly, our waste re-circulates back into the blood stream and can become present through the skin. Stress. It can’t be ignored that stress will exacerbate any condition, and acne is not exempt from this.Symptoms: Acne will usually present itself anywhere on the face, chest, shoulders, arms, back and buttocks Blackheads/ whiteheads Inflamed swollen red bumps Cysts Small red bumps (papules) Pus-filled bumps (pustules) ScarringWhat to do about acne:Identifying the cause will play a major role in treating acne. However, regardless of the cause, you can support healthy skin by:Consuming a fresh and whole food diet and drink plenty of water. By focusing on fresh, whole and unprocessed foods you naturally consume a high nutrient and high fibre diet, which aid in healthy cell regeneration and good bowel movements. The bacteria present with acne, like all bacterium, love to feed on sugar. So any sugar consumption will make the condition worse. Apart from to sugar, sensitivity to dairy may also worsen acne.Maintain a good facial/skin hygiene regime, don’t pick at the inflamed areas and avoid touching your face as much as possible. Keep hands clean as they are a shuttle for germs from the world to your face.Use a mild cleanser and gentle moisturizer twice a day. Contrary to popular belief, stripping all the oils from your face is counter productive, as more oil than before will be produced in its place.
