Hair must knows: Hair shedding through the seasons

Rain or shine, one thing is for sure, our hair will keep growing.. and shedding.

In fact, a regular part of the hair growth process is hair loss. While you may have previously thought this a cause for concern, you need to know that it’s not only healthy to lose hair, but an essential aspect of scalp health. By shedding old strands of hair, you allow for fresh hair to grow in. The average individual’s hair grows approximately one cm per month, and up to 15 cm (six inches) per year. Since heat stimulates hair growth, it’s common to experience a faster growth rate during the summer. But there are certain times of year, such as autumn, when the weather becomes cooler and more dry, and hair loss increases. This is completely normal.

If you’re noticing large amounts of hair loss on a daily basis (like big clumps whenever you brush your hair or take a shower), it’s worthwhile digging deeper into what’s causing this problem. Often, the problem is not what styling techniques or products you’re using, but rather an internal malfunction. Hair loss can be the result of an improper diet, stress, some medications, or even extreme weight loss. Take note that these circumstances are rare and you should only be concerned if the hair loss you are experiencing is severe.

Breakage is also often misinterpreted for shedding. Reckless brushing can leave even the most healthy and strong hair broken and damaged-looking. If you use a wide-toothed comb instead of a hairbrush and start from the bottom of the hair strands, slowly working your way up, you will cause less breakage. Using a normal brush is fine if your hair is dry, but, no matter what, if your hair has knots, work carefully through them to prevent your strands from snapping.

Keep those lock growing strong with regular scalp massages, a balanced diet and messing less with your hair.
