If you’re a regular reader of ours, we will confidently assume that you are interested in living an eco-friendly, ‘green’ and sustainable lifestyle – after all, Amazingy is all about doing good and feeling good!
But what about if we took a wild guess and presumed that most of your closet consisted of clothing you got from one big fast fashion retailer or another? We’d likely be spot-on. Yes, those evil companies whose business practices we all know to be exploitative, wildly unethical and that everybody knows we should seek to avoid – they still manage to make an appearance in the wardrobes of even the most conscious consumers among us. Why is it then, that despite our best efforts, so many of us can’t come clean of H&M and the likes? I find that it boils down to two main things – aesthetics and affordability.
While eco-fashion is undoubtedly on the rise, it still has that old hippie image stuck to it. When we hear ‘sustainable fashion’, images come to mind of tye-dyed wrap dresses made from stiff linen or shapeless things that nobody in their right mind would want to wear. A good conscience seems synonymous with a disinterest in looking stylish. The bad reputation for sustainable style is still hanging around, even though so many revolutionary new brands are popping up.
Moreover, most people find it hard to find green alternatives to the well-known high street brands that that are both affordable and attractive – after all, not everybody has the means to spend all their disposable income on one plain blouse or on a vegan Stella McCartney handbag. Thankfully, these points are only concerns until you dig a bit deeper and find out that – wow – there are actually quite a few brands that make gorgeous, on-trend clothing and still manage to stick to their ethics.
To help you ease your way into the growing world of sustainable and ethically made apparel we have selected some labels that are just as fashionable as the latest pieces from Zara (added bonus: you probably won’t run into three other women wearing the same dress) Stay tuned for more to come in this series on Amazingy Mag!
Reformation is a California-based fashion brand that designs and produces most of their apparel in their very own factory in Downtown LA. Not only does Reformation stand for fair wages and local production, they also use cutting-edge sustainable fabrics such as Tencel, which is a fabric made from the eucalyptus tree that requires almost no irrigation. This is as opposed to cotton, which gobbles up so much water, that even when labeled ‘organic’, doesn’t actually make for a very eco-friendly option at all.
The clothes are fun and feminine, with a California edge to them. There’s a reason the brand has been able to gain a huge following in the US, with celebrities like Taylor Swift showing off their pieces on the daily.
The limited-edition collections from the Californian brand range from romantic to minimalistic, offering a new favourite piece for just about every type. Looking for a sweet floral sundress for the wedding season? Check! The perfect pair of cropped, flared black trousers for the 70’s cool-girl vibes? Reformation’s got you covered. The brand also takes the perfect fit seriously – all items are designed to flatter the female body regardless of size, so you can be sure that they will look as flattering on you as on the size 2 model.
Reformation is living proof that eco-fashion can be anything but dull and boring! Their clothes may be made from recycled and surplus fabrics (which doesn’t sound too sexy) but their feminine prints and bold colours make scrolling through their online shop a tough exercise in self-control. Now, if that wasn’t enough to tempt us they also offer free worldwide shipping – let the shopping commence!
