HIRO is an entirely natural cosmetics line, an extension of our company’s ethical standards and environmental advocacy, and as its employees, we try to adhere to that ethos and lead by example. Of course, the means of ethical consumption will vary person to person – as one’s lifestyle choices and overall circumstances directly correlate to self-sustainability – but when we make even the smallest positive choices, they can have larger ripple effects on the environment as a whole.
“Currently both of us are vegetarian and are leaning more and more towards a vegan diet – both an ethical choice and a political retaliation against the current food economy we live in.”
When the DJs are at home, they try as much as possible to lean on alternative means of travel. Britta chooses to ride her bicycle whenever possible to avoid contributing to carbon emissions – and Unders uses his new electronic skateboard from Inboard to do the same (which he says is probably the coolest eco-friendly mode of transport on the planet!). It can be difficult to be consistent with their sustainable practices as flying from location to location is a part of their job, but since they started with their new management company We Are E, efficient organizational tactics have enabled them to take less flights.
“And we are planning a summer tour with campers to completely eliminate flying during our peak summer season. Obviously these campers will be built as eco-friendly as possible. And of course we’ll have our own water bottles during our travels.”
And with a schedule that‘s only getting busier and busier, they realise that eating healthy can make a huge difference in their energy levels. Their intake of water has increased to help keep their bodies revitalized, and over the past few months they‘ve even incorporated yoga into their morning routines to offset the imbalance that comes with only being able to get 3 hours of undisturbed sleep between shows.
“Both of us try to catch sleep whenever it‘s possible: in the taxi, on the train, on the plane – we basically sleep everywhere.”
And it doesn‘t get any easier when it comes to their skin care regimens. Try as they may, being constantly on the road doesn‘t really lend itself to staying consistent with self-care practices, so we gave them some insider tips on which products could prove useful, especially during their travels:
“I don‘t usually use much makeup I only use mascara and lipstick. But after the photo shoot, I would really like to wear more. It felt very natural and super light on the skin, and I loved the lipstick, as well, because it matched with my hair perfectly.”

J. R. Thesis Smith is a mixed-race millenial in the dawn of their 30s & a wordsmith of sorts. They've spent most of their waking life in the U.S. – in the urban sprawl of NYC that is New Jersey, in the depths of its suburban echoes – but always dreamed of making their way across a bigger pond, to a place where opportunity would knock a little more often. After completing their training at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts (effectively spending three poor years in NYC) as a dance major, they gifted themselves a semester of studying abroad in Berlin, and in doing so kept a vow made in early adolescence – thereby inciting a metamorphosis of promise into full-bodied intention: to eventually fully emigrate to Berlin, the first space that had ever allowed them the freedom to find their own breath, their pace of existence. Now that they finally live there, they're learning how to breathe again – striving to become a more active member of the Undercommons as they continue on the odyssey that is their self-realization as an artistic being. Their most resonant hope is that they will be able to say what is true & necessary & kind; that people will find the time to listen, to themselves and each other; and that their voice will inspire other voices to speak out in turn.
