Behind the Brand: Fine Deodorant

Judith is a double—wait a triple threat, no WAIT—we’ve lost count. This multi-talented super mom has got a P.h.D., is a practicing yoga teacher, and has spent the past ten years working as a curator. Sounds like she’d have a lot of free time right? Enough time to start her own luxury bio deodorant brand, apparently, and we’re glad she did. The fabulous combination of vetiver and geranium make up the Fine Deo odor. The smell is subtle but extremely alluring—an attractive scent for both men and women. Best of all? This natural deo really works, keeping B.O. out of sight. It’s no wonder Judith felt compelled to make this product, because there’s nothing else like it on the market.

What sparked the idea for this brand – how did it all begin?

I was looking for a green but functional deodorant for years. When I found one, it didn’t exactly have an attractive design or scent but it was working nonetheless. Then a dear friend of mine told me that it’s pretty easy to make deo yourself. So I started cooking and experimenting. My friends were totally enthusiastic, so I put my aesthetic preferences into this particular product, resulting in great design, scent, and efficiency.

How was the reaction of you family / friends / colleagues when you came up with the idea of the brand?

From curious, supportive to skeptical.

Why did you choose the name?

This is actually a funny story. My husband is a very eloquent man, but when it comes to communicating information to me that I WANT, he tends to become monosyllabic. His favourite word is “Fein” (German for good). No matter what I ask, he replies “FEIN”. So when I came up to him asking for suggestions for a good name for the brand, he replied “FEIN”. So I took him by his word, using the English word “fine” (same meaning), but switched it up again by taking the Italian version for the brand. But the English meaning is also part of it, of course. FINE in Italian stands for “end”, and that is just what “FINE” is: it ends your search for a good, green and efficient deodorant. Your worrying about your body odor can come to an end for good.

How would you describe the ideology behind your brand?

Aesthetically sophisticated.

How many employees do you have now? In how many countries are your products distributed?

None, it is just me (and my kids, mom, and partner giving me an occasional hand). As of now, I am selling in Germany and Spain, but the number is growing continuously.

Name 3 of your favorite beauty products that you can’t live without.

Tinted moisturizer by Josh Rosebrook, RMS master mixer and un-cover up.

What is a cosmetics no-go for you?

Bad, cheap smells (like in cheap perfumes).

Could you give us a glimpse behind the scenes: what does a day in your life look like?

Kids, meditating, practicing yoga, doing desk work, packing, and spending time with my hubby.

What can we find you doing on the weekends?

I have no weekdays and no weekend since my husband regularly works the weekends (he is a singer), so apart from sleeping in a little bit and the kids being around, there is no big difference to weekdays.

What’s your favorite food & drink?

Drink: Moroccan Tea, Marrakesh Tea (Moroccan herbal tea), Matcha Latte
Food: Marzipan

Any places/spots around the world that you’ve been to that you’d like to share with us?

I have found heaven on the Moroccan countryside close to Essaouira in a former farm house. It is the most beautiful estate, with lots of animals, plants and the perfect interior design.

What’s your favorite meal to cook at home?

Lentil-Coco-Red Pepper-Soup

Special hidden talents?

I have a lot of (not so hidden) talents, I think I inherited that from my father. I can do a lot and I am interested in a lot, but that also is a burden, since you never burn for one thing in particular. That is why I spent time at university, obtaining a Ph.D., have been a curator for the past 10 years, and am a yoga teacher… all next to building up my new brand.

What are your hobbies besides your job?

Yoga is not my hobby, it is a state of being

What makes your company environmentally conscious?

We use a small bag to contain the deodorant, which has been ethically produced and is made from organic cotton. The spatulas that are sold with the deo are made in a workshop in Berlin by people with special needs. I always reuse packing material.

What are you doing to find new inspiration ?

Yoga and art curating give me loads of inspiration.
