Does drinking more water actually help with dry skin? The answer; yes, and no. Drinking enough water is of course necessary for your overall health and for maintaining a healthy glow. There is however a big difference between having dry skin, and dehydrated skin.
Dehydrated skin can be ‘puffed up’ again by drinking enough water. This doesn’t mean, that everyone should drink 2.5L each and every day. At any sign of dehydration however, grabbing a glass of water is sure to help.
Dry skin is not necessarily caused by a lack of moisture, but more often by a damaged skin barrier. This means that the intracellular protective layer of the skin is no longer able to hold on to moisture deep into skin. Instead, the moisture evaporates, causing your skin to dry out. To prevent dry skin, the skin barrier needs to be repaired. This means avoiding sunbathing, chemical ingredients in crèmes and cleaners, refraining from too much alcohol in both skin products as beverages, and of course: no smoking.
It also helps to use moisturizing masks with a high fat content, preferably the completely natural ones. A good example is a DIY avocado mask.
