As this column is all about beauty myths, you’ve probably already guessed that this tale holds little ground when we take a closer look at it.

The main cause for nearly all skin impurities such as pimples and blocked pores is caused by excessive sebum production. From a physiological perspective, our hormonal balance is the culprit when it comes to pimples, next to a possible genetic predisposition to acne, and in fact, not the chocolate.

Your hormones can change and be imbalanced for a variety of reasons – stress, menstruation, puberty or pregnancy, just to name a few. When this happens, it’s not unheard of to satisfy any cravings with something sweet. It’s no surprise then, that chocolate is viewed as the main cause for bad skin.

Pimples caused by hormones usually appear on the chin and around the mouth, whereas blemishes in the T-zone, especially on the forehead, indicate poor nutrition.

An unhealthy diet, regular alcohol consumption and smoking also have a negative effect on the skin. If anything, an increased consumption of sugar can also be held responsible for skin blemishes.
There’s no need to throw the baby out with the bathwater however: raw cacao has numerous health benefits, and can even alleviate depressive moods. To learn more about raw cacao, read this article.

If f you choose to satisfy your chocolate cravings, enjoy a high quality chocolate, containing at the very least 75 percent of cocoa or more, knowing it won’t cause a reactive breakout.
